Being stubborn, hard-headed, and determined to see things my way can be very helpful at times. There are seasons these attributes have helped see me through. If I could go back in time I would encourage myself to stop being so stubborn and stop thinking I could do it on my own. While being stubborn and determined might have given me the human wherewithal to push forward in life, the peace and the hope were missing.
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not rely on your own understanding; think about Him in all your ways, and He will guide you on the right paths.
When we stop focusing on us and what we think we can do on
our own and we start focusing on what God’s Word says we begin to realize that doing
it ourselves isn’t even what we’re supposed to do. God repeatedly says to follow
Him, lean on Him, trust Him, and obey Him. He does not tell us to tough it out
or to figure it out using our own wisdom.
All those times that I tried to stubbornly run through life usually
ended with more heartache waiting. There were times I absolutely gave up hope
and allowed circumstances, most of my own making, to dictate my abilities and
how I was to live forever. A peaceful heart was far from my mind because my heart
and mind were not on following God, but on surviving to get through to the next
catastrophe. This is not the life of a Christian woman! This is what the world
is stuck doing on repeat unless Jesus opens their eyes to the Truth. It is not
honoring to God for us to follow in this same pattern then.
Who among you fears the Lord, listening to the voice of His Servant?
Who among you walks in darkness, and has no light?
Let him trust in the name of Yahweh; let him lean on his God.
Discerning the right path among the almost right paths and
listening for that still small voice is not easy. However, that’s why we need
to hold so tightly to Jesus. If we are not looking for Him then we will never
follow and if we are not reading His Word then we will never grow.
Stubbornness and determination will get you through many things, but they don’t leave your soul at rest. Obeying God’s command to follow and lean on Him will not make the difficult times easy; if anything, it will increase the times that the difficult choice is in front of you, but they will lead to a heart at rest as you trust that His ways are higher and better.
I am thankful that my stubbornness and determination are now tempered with the truth that my life is not all on my shoulders, it rests instead safely in God’s hands. Following Him and trusting Him to lead the way is something we each learn in God’s perfect time.
Praying that each of you will also choose to lay aside the
things the world says have helped you survive and hold on to God and His perfect
plan that you would instead thrive.
May peace come to all those who follow this standard,
and mercy to the Israel of God!
Encouragement to seek God’s strength instead of our own:
I'm Rebecca, a Christian, wife, and mother of three. I lived wrong for a long time, got pretty well slapped with the reality of how sanctifying marriage and motherhood are, and now I am hoping to help others to hold on to Jesus in all the hard parts of life.
